Mr. Ignasius Jonan is currently the Indonesian Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources. He was a former Indonesian Minister of Transportation a former CEO of the Indonesian government-owned railway company, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT. KAI)..
Mr. Jonan started his career as an accountant and investment manager. In 1999, he became Director for Private Equity at the Citigroup branch in Indonesia. Two years later, he was appointed CEO of the government-owned investment firm, PT. Bahana Pembinaan Usaha Indonesia, assuming the role until 2006. He was Managing Director and Head of Investment Banking for Indonesia at Citi from 2006 to 2009.
In 2009, he entered the public transportation sector when he was asked by the then-Minister of State-owned Enterprises, to be the head of PT. Kereta Api Indonesia, in the midst of the railway company’s low performance and severe financial troubles. He was faced with PT. KAI’s 27,000 employees with low performance expectations in terms of work quality, a large financial deficit, and a high percentage of substandard or broken locomotives, diesel trains, freight cars and crumbling stations. In the 5-years that he headed PT KAI, he transformed the public perception of the Indonesian rail transportation system; and significantly increased passenger ridership and freight loads. In October 2014, he was appointed as the Minister of Transportation; and in 2016 as the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Mr. Jonan graduated Bachelor of Economics in Accounting from Airlangga University’s School of Business and Economics in 1985. Between 1999 and 2000, he undertook executive and management programs at Columbia Business School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. In 2005, he graduated Master of Arts in International Relations and Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
