Mr. John Stanhope spent 45 years in senior management positions at Telstra culminating as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Group Managing Director (Finance) of Telstra, and an Executive Director of Telstra. He was instrumental in the Telstra share float and the introduction of the NBN.
Mr Stanhope was the Financial Review’s CFO of the Year in 2011, and in 2012 a recipient of a CFO Dealbook Award, for his contributions and achievements in the field. Throughout his extensive and influential career, Mr Stanhope has led the way in governance, finance, business strategy and risk management.
On leaving Telstra, Mr. Stanhope was appointed Chairman(non-executive) of Australia Post in November 2012 for a term of 4-years, due to his extensive experience in finance, treasury, risk management and assurance, investor relations and corporate security and investigations.
Mr Stanhope was appointed Deakin University’s sixth Chancellor in 2016. He has had a long and valued relationship with his alma mater. Mr Stanhope has been a council member of Deakin University since 2012, and the Deputy Chair of Council’s Investment Committee and a member of the Finance and Business Affairs Committee. He received a Deakin Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and generously established the annual John Stanhope PhD Scholarship in Leadership at Deakin Business School.
In addition to his leadership roles at Deakin University and Australia Post, Mr Stanhope is currently the Chairman of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and the Business Reporting Leaders Forum (BRLF). He is also a Director of AGL Energy Limited; the Bionics Institute, and Our Neighbourhood.
Mr Stanhope holds a BCom (Economics and Accounting) from Deakin University and is a Fellow of CPA Australia (FCPA); the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (FCA) and the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (FCMA). He is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD); Australian Institute of Management (FAIM) and the Australian Human Resources Institute (FAHRI).
The Institute of Certified Management Accountants is honoured to induct Mr. John Stanhope to the Global Management Accounting Hall of Fame® for his services to the profession in Australia.
