Professor Chris Patel is currently Professor in International Accounting at Macquarie University. He has served in a number of other leadership roles at the university, including the Head of the Department of Accounting & Governance. His contributions to the academic world, to business, and to global NGOs and governments have been recognised by awards, international research grants, invitations to provide research leadership to overseas universities, and invitations by governments to contribute in improving accounting and governance in their countries. He has been a visiting scholar at universities in the USA, Canada, UK, Italy and China.
Prof Patel has provided leadership in establishing the Research Unit in International Accounting Research at Macquarie University. The unit has a strong reputation globally; and attracts visiting scholars and research students keen on improving the quality of accounting, accountability and corporate governance in countries such as China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Sweden, Denmark and Germany, amongst others.
He has published extensively in leading scholarly journals and research monographs; and his publications have over a thousand citations. He is on the editorial board of eight scholarly journals; and has received research grants from China, India, Germany, Demark and Italy. He has successfully supervised a number of doctoral students; many who have gone on to have their own distinguished careers, both in the academic community and in the business world. He was appointed with the responsibility of assessing the quality of research grant applications by the Norwegian Government to the Research Council of Norway; and by the Canadian Government to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Prof Patel is passionate about improving the quality of accounting and governance particularly in emerging countries. He has acted as an adviser to the Asian Development Bank, World Bank and the World Health Organization; and been invited by the Secretary of Finance of Papua New Guinea to help improve the quality of accounting and governance in that country.
Prof Patel’s qualifications include a MCom (Hons) from the University of Wollongong, and a PhD from Macquarie University. He is a Chartered Accountant (CA) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia and a Fellow Certified Management Accountant (FCMA). He is the New South Wales President of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants.
